What is PREP?
Preventing HIV with PrEP
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) refers to a preventative measure against HIV transmission. PrEP involves the regular intake of a single dose of Truvada or Descovy, an HIV medication, once daily. This prophylactic regimen serves as an effective preventive strategy to mitigate the risk of acquiring HIV infection.
PrEP: HIV Only Protection
While Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) offers reassurance regarding HIV prevention, it is important to note that PrEP does not provide protection against other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and hepatitis.
PrEP: Regular Medical Check-ups
Regular medical consultations are vital while on PrEP, typically scheduled every three months, for routine blood work and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening.

PrEP is covered by various programs in Ontario, offering free or low-cost options for eligible individuals, including those under 25 or over 65, Ontario Works (OW) and ODSP recipients, Indigenous individuals with status, many refugees, and those with private drug insurance. Assistance with Trillium Drug Benefit application is available if lacking drug insurance.
